Coach Nancy Fowlkes graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Longwood University where she captained the field hockey team, played lacrosse and served as president of her class. She earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from The George Washington University.
Coach Fowlkes taught Health and Physical Education and coached a variety of sports at Cox High School for 43 years and retired in 2015.
Field Hockey coaching defined her career. She was considered one of the premier high school coaches and long had the title of the “winningest field hockey coach in the country.” Her teams captured a national record, 13 Virginia State titles. She and her team were featured on ESPN and in Sports Illustrated and the 1999 team was pictured on the TEAM Cheerios box. After she released the reins of the field hockey program, Coach Fowlkes was a surprise hire as an assistant head Varsity football coach. She worked with the running backs and linebackers and helped the Cox Falcons to nine regional appearances. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Longwood University, The Virginia High School League Hall of Fame, the Hampton Roads Hall of Fame and the Field Hockey Ring of Honor at the Sportsplex. Coach Fowlkes was honored to be recognized by the Virginia Beach Sports Club as The Coach of the year four times and also felt privileged to receive their Director’s Award and Sportsman of the Year award. Coach Fowlkes has long been an advocate for developing student leadership skills and served as the coordinator of the Virginia Beach Leadership Workshop and the Advisor’s Workshop for 16 years. She currently serves as an officer for the Virginia Beach Student Leadership Foundation.
The Virginia Beach Sports Club was founded in 1952 in response to a call from the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce for assistance in sponsoring golf tournaments in which nationally known players would participate. Activities have been broadened to include a wide variety of sports related events and projects.
The primary project of the Club is the financial support given to athlete scholars from the Virginia Beach high schools. The scholarship program was only an idea until Mr. Gordon Kavanaugh donated a sizeable contribution to really get it off the ground. The Club has awarded over 470 scholarships totaling over $440,000 since the program began. Through this program, the Sports Club is investing in the future of Virginia Beach, by helping the education of our most important product – our future.
Each spring the Club conducts its annual Sports Jamboree to raise funds to support the scholarship program and honor high school athletes and coaches. The Jamboree recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes from each of the Virginia Beach Public High Schools. The Jamboree awards are primarily for extraordinary athletic achievements during the school year. The athletic awards are distinct and separate from the scholarship awards presented at the end of the school year for academic accomplishments.
